Itinerary
- Join your Guide, a Certified Social Scientist and Sex Educator: I’m Jeff, a trained social scientist, certified sex educator, and freelance journalist writing on Berlin and its club culture. During my tour, I’ll share knowledge accumulated from over a decade’s worth of research.
- Explore the History of Berlin’s Club Culture: The modern club culture we see in Berlin today began in the 1970s, when the city was still divided by the Berlin Wall. Learn why the Cold War is the reason behind Berlin’s no-curfew policy, how West Berlin became a nightlife hotspot, and what role the former Berlin Wall and GDR played in the emergence of Techno culture in the 1990s.
- Understand how Berlin Clubs were Built by Marginalized Communities: Berlin’s clubs would not exist without the influence of LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC communities. Hear how trans woman Romy Haag launched a nightlife revolution in 1974, how the gay community’s SchwuZ fought back against homophobia during the AIDS crisis, and how Techno DJs from Detroit’s black community delivered the music for a liberated generation following the fall of the Berlin Wall.
